Whether you own your own condo and want it to look nicer, or you’re a property manager trying to help move an existing condo, improving the kitchen is a great choice!  There are plenty of options in condo renovation, but the kitchen is usually the best place to start.  A great modern kitchen will improve a condo’s value, as well as its sell-ability.

Plus, of course, having a great kitchen makes the condo so much nicer to live in!

We’ve done plenty of kitchens in our 25+ years serving the Chicagoland area, so here are some things to keep in mind when doing your own condo renovation.

What to Consider When Renovating Your Condo’s Kitchen

  1. Smart use of space

Condo kitchens will almost always be smaller than those in full-sized houses, and that sometimes leads renovators to overcorrect by cramming in too many features and fixtures.  Remember that a kitchen needs to have a balance between used space and available prep space.  Try to choose fixtures and appliances which are multi-purpose and avoid single-use gadgets.

  1. Do you need all those walls?

Walls are another challenge in condo kitchens, again, due to the limited space.  If there’s a wall separating the kitchen and dining areas, consider knocking it down.  Open floor plans are big right now – they make your space feel bigger and more inviting.  If this isn’t an option, use light or bright colors to make the kitchen feel more open.  Avoid dark colors if it’s small; that will only make it feel more cramped.

  1. Tie the space together with flooring

Your kitchen flooring choices have to be both attractive and functional.  Right now, wood flooring is extremely popular, and wood is a timeless choice that rarely goes out of style.  Try to avoid tile if possible, as the designs on it tend to become dated quickly.  Also, if you’re doing an open floor plan, you should have the same flooring in the kitchen and dining areas.

  1. Countertops

The craze for putting granite everywhere has mostly died down, so there’s room to be more creative.  Try soapstone, which comes in a variety of colors and can match with many different design styles.  If you have an open floor plan, consider turning one counter into an island with barstools or seats nearby.
